In December, the Newton City Council unanimously adopted its version of the BERDO (Buildings Emission Reductions and Disclosures Ordinance). Boston and Cambridge have had similar regulations for many years, and now Newton joins them in requiring larger buildings to disclose and potentially reduce GHG emissions over time. This regulation is in addition to the new Massachusetts energy disclosure requirements for all buildings statewide over 20,000 SF. Approximately 300 existing buildings in Newton will be subject to the new regulations, which eventually require these buildings to achieve net zero operational carbon. Article
